As August came to a close, Congressman Charlie Melancon (D), from the 3rd District announced that he would be challenging Sen David Vitter for his seat in the upcoming election of 2010. Once again illustrating the major problem with our elected officials and their unending quests for power.

While I am not a proponent of another term for Sen. Vitter, ( I believe in a 2010/2012 cleansing ), Rep. Melancon’s decision elicits many questions within me, that need answering.

Why would he have avoided the town hall forums that were so prevelent during the August break,  if not due to a fear that he could not justify his stances on the issues of the day to his employers?  and,  How much further divided from his constituents would he be once a Senate position is gained?

Is this move to the Senate just another house-hopping attempt to garner a six year term appointment as opposed to the 2 year cycles of Congressional Representatives which currently force him to face citizen approval much more repetitiously. Remember, Congressmen who screw up can be removed a lot faster than Senators!

Another question that needs answering is where exactly did he and his wife travel during the break and what exactly were they doing on his ” Global Warming” Junket to such exotic locations as reported?  How does Swimming in Italy of any of his other activities really help the cause for a safer environment?  Not to mention the $500,000.00 price tag, paid for this vacation, ( I mean “fact finding mission” ), by the taxpayers?

Also included in my concerns is the issue that should Mr. Melancon actually pull off this victory, the Democratic majority in the Senate will most certainly retain it’s filibuster proof  firewall, and Mr. Melancon will owe his position and future votes to the Democratic Party who will spend millions fighting  Sen. Vitter on his behalf, and not the citizens of Louisiana whom he would supposedly represent.

The only benefit to this move is that his Congressional seat will not be sought by an incumbent and that opens the door for the citizens of the 3rd District to have their voices heard clearly by electing an independent voice to Congress.

I sincerely wish that some new face with new ideas and a strong allegiance to the people who elected them, will rise to the top and be put into place. As stated earlier, I am an advocate for a total cleansing of the House and Senate over the next two election cycles and beleive strongly that it is only through such a cleansing that we will once again have representation of the people , by the people and for the people.

What we as a nation, and indeed a state must decide is whether we truly want the type of representation our country was founded upon and for, or do we merely want someone so embedded within the system to reap the benefits of earmarked bribery.

Will we sell our souls and indeed our Republic and Freedoms for a new bike path or increased employment through Government expansions? Our Government has ceased to be responsive and protective to the very citizenry that has elected them, and it is our duty to regain control of our nation again.
