Tonight. I was watching a little television, and during that interval, a proverbial “Slap to my Head” struck me. Hard!  You know.. about eight steps up from the old and cartoon-like ” light bulb” going off over my head, yet a full two steps down from a “mule kick” to the back of an ear.

I, like many of you I am sure, find myself often times genuinely stunned, by much of what I see and hear these days, broadcast non-stop in this the age of the 24hr. news cycle, by any one of  the countless methods we have now for receiving and broadcasting information to the masses, Hell!  to the world for that matter.

Stunned, at the many different ways we find ourselves embattled with each other. Whether it be over esoteric theory, political ideology, theology, even something as minute as the basic manner in which we try to enjoy national pastimes, can sometimes launch into areas that find us repulsed by what we see. ( consider the mayhem, violence and even torching of certain areas after sporting championships…  by those who WON!  ???????  )

Repulsed by what we see ourselves, as “mankind”, turning in to. Finding ourselves increasingly concerned, because we, by understanding the propensity for History to repeat itself, see a dangerous trend not only emerging, but spreading. Fueled by uncertainty, and a Government’s need and tendency for growth.

This chronic “Need” of Government that I speak of is “Dependency!” ( with a double emphasis on the first syllable.) The more a Government can obtain a dependency from the people, the more it not only encroaches upon their freedoms,  but actually stops any facade of representation and moves without hindrance towards full scale subjugation.

Ask anyone about the “American Dream” these days…  write down their answers and compare them later.  Many will say the same thing, (or at least in essence ), ” The American Dream is to have a good job, own a nice home, spend time with your family and friends, and see my children do even better than I! “

There may be variations on this theme, but for the most part, their answers will generally contain some, most, or all of the sentiment of that statement.

A far cry unfortunately, from much of the current sentiment that seems to be tainting a large portion of the national debate. Too often now, we hear people calling for more to be taken from some and given to those with less. “The Redistribution of Wealth” as they call it, or as it is more commonly considered, “Socialism.”

Class warfare and Envy have seemingly taken root,(at least for the time being ), by many across this Nation. Those who feel that in these trying times, it is only through such redistribution, that equity can be achieved.

Not realizing, that such a thing goes against the very fiber and core of all that has not only made this great country what it is, but which has also, made the American People stand out as the most resilient and dedicated people in much of recorded history.

The American Dream is being twisted. Reshaped and redefined to fit an agenda of increased Government entitlement. “I will earn it!”, is being replaced with ” It is owed me!”, just as “It is my responsibility!” is now quickly becoming ” It’s there fault!”

Since We have mentioned history, go back and count the number of Socialist Nations that have succeeded. Both the Government AND the People. Just look around the Globe today, and see the catastrophes that many are facing because they have bought into such a system of “Shared Wealth!”  (Note the many times the term “Unsustainable” is used by those who report upon and dissect such things…Even from the halls of our very own Congress! )

It is within the confines of this ideology that the term ” Dream” is somehow misrepresented, and to often being replaced with ” Guarantee! ” Tragically forgetting what a wise one once warned, that the only Guarantees in life were “Taxes and Death!”

And as harsh as that may sound. Understanding that!, is what drives people forward to make their own way!  To seek their fortunes on their own!, and in their own declared ” Pursuit of Happiness! “. It is the certainty of the massive uncertainty, that fuels their effort. The Chance to succeed! With only the “freedom to try” being guaranteed.

When seeing so many clammer and call for more of what is not their’s, nor that they are apparently willing to even attempt to achieve by themselves, I find myself wondering, ” Where did We Go?”

Alot of deep thought perhaps, from merely watching a television program, perhaps! But considering what I was watching when this initial contemplation was jolted, I guess it makes sense.

I was watching John Wayne’s “McClintock!” This scene in particular, where his son Patrick’s character, ( a down on his luck farmer ) was looking for work. He was desperate and got a job with McClintock.  After attempting to punch McClintock (right after receiving a job), He, confessing that he was feeling anger for being in a position where he was forced to beg for work, told McClintock that ” he was sorry, and shouldn’t have tried to hit someone who had just “given him a job!”

John Wayne’s answer?  ” I didn’t GIVE you anything! I don’t GIVE jobs… I Hire men!   I will pay you a honest days pay, for a honest days labor! I give you nothing and you give me nothing!

Movie Dialogue? Yes!..   But an arrangement of business, and deeper assessment of personal character, that WE will ALL need, to make it though these tough days. Anything less, on either side of this equation…  is the corruption of the process that got us here!    And the beginning of the end for the American Dream!
